Big Sur Bike Trip - Enter the Photo Gallery

For my spring break in 2006 I decided to ride the coast from Santa Cruz to San Luis Obispo. Little did I know that I was planning one of my most difficult physical challenges yet. I had just bought a new lightweight cross bike with slick tires because my mountain bike was ripped off down town. In preparation I outfitted my bike with a rack, panniers, bar ends, and lights, did some quick planning, and caught a ride from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz. I spent some time with some friends in Santa Cruz and watched the weather forecast. When it looked like there was a window of opportunity in the weather I split.

Map The first day was really hard and I got lost coming out of Santa Cruz, in Capitola, and in Monterey. Big Sur was incredible and I recommend the stretch of highway one to anyone brave enough to ride a bike. Some of the hill climbs stretch for one or two miles but flying down the other side was always worth the effort. The last day was long but I was determined to get to the bus stop (instead of camping another night) and I was amazed with myself when I calculated that I covered a distance of almost 80 miles that day! I met a lot of interesting and crazy people on my ride and spent one-day and all night cold, miserable, and soaking wet! Overall the trip was great and I enjoyed some alone time. Enjoy the photos.
